Source of the Danube, Donaueschingen
At Donaueschingen the Danube begins: in the palace park, the ornate Donauquelle basin — an allegorical statue group of Mother Baar showing her daughter, the young Danube, the way — marks the symbolic source where Brigach and Breg are said to bring the river to the town, opened in 1969 as East Germany’s showcase tower.
